## Math and Probabilities - Math's Relation to Probabilities

Math's relation to the probabilities is rather interesting because there is an abstract parallel to probabilities. Many teachers will share mathematical theory as they work diligently with students. Centuries ago the renaissance mathematicians solved many of the problems through mathematical equations and began teaching the results of these detailed studies with their students. Probability itself is based in mathematics as the equations are very similar to algebra I, algebra II, calculus I, calculus II, calculus III, geometry and trigonometry. These all pertain to the initial problem, move into solving the problem and revealing the outcome.

The use of triangles is of utmost importance and seems to play a very important role in the computation leading to the end result. Teachers and students together work diligent to reach an outcome to any problem presented, but there are variables involved too. Like with geometry, algebra, and calculus questions presented with the discovery of the probably also use mathematical equations to solve the problem and deduct the logical conclusion. Many times with probabilities the outcome is unexpected and therefore a surprise to the student who was expecting a different outcome.

Students think of mathematical probabilities as more of an educated guess as to the outcome of any given situation. An example is the question, what are the chances of rain on a bright sunny day when no clouds are in sight? What is the opportunity of snow falling in Hawaii during the course of a calendar year? How long will it take for a lit six-inch candle to melt? Is this a certain outcome or an uncertain outcome? The question is what is the probability? Students will at times refer to the outcome of the probability in the form of a percentage.

When the student assigns a probability of zero to a given event, this will indicate the event will never occur. When the student assigns a probability of one to a given event, this will indicate will occur. To the vast population of students the concept of mathematical probabilities really comes down to an educated guess based on the information received through the use of mathematical equations. Therefore a student's conclusion becomes a subjective probability that reflects a student's opinion about the likelihood of any given event.
