What is so good about distance education programs?

We Answered:

Distance education, or distance learning, is a field of education that focuses on the pedagogy and andragogy, technology, and instructional systems design that aim to deliver education to students who are not physically "on site". According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “is a process to create and provide access to learning when the source of information and the learners are separated by time and distance, or both.” In other words, distance learning is the process of creating an educational experience of equal qualitative value for the learner to best suit their needs outside the classroom. Rather than attending courses in person, teachers and students may communicate at times of their own choosing by exchanging printed or electronic media, or through technology that allows them to communicate in real time and through other online ways. Distance education courses that require a physical on-site presence for any reason including the taking of examinations is considered to be a hybrid or blended course of study. This emerging technology is becoming widely used in universities and institutions around the globe. With the recent trend of technological advance, distance learning is becoming more recognized for its potential in providing individualized attention and communication with students internationally.
Distance education has proved to be beneficial because of the main four categories, such as:

* Expanding access: A common use for distance education is that states and companies worldwide need to be able to reach residents and others outside the county.
* Emerging market opportunities: Distance education fuels the publics need for lifelong learning in education by providing access to learners not in the traditional k-12 age group.
* Adapting to new technology and environments: Greater educations are being forced to adapt to the rapid new technology being used in education today

What do you think of Distance Education programs? Do you recommend any?

We Answered:

"Distance Learning (DL) is an instructional delivery system that connects learners with educational resources. DL provides educational access to learners not enrolled in educational institutions and can augment the learning opportunities of current students. The implementation of DL is a process that uses available resources and will evolve to incorporate emerging technologies."

Several key features define distance learning. The importance of the teacher — learner communications cannot be overstated.

the separation of teacher and learner during at least a majority of each instructional process
separation of teacher and learner in space and/or time
the use of educational media to unite teacher and learner and carry course content
the provision of two-way communication between teacher, tutor, or educational agency and learner, and
control of the learning pace by the student rather than the distance instructor.
These definitions apply equally to high tech and low tech approaches to distance learning. The multiple distance learning definitions and other terminology is addressed in the tutorial.

There are two distance education delivery system categories - synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous instruction requires the simultaneous participation of all students and instructors. The advantage of synchronous instruction is that interaction is done in "real time" and has an immediacy. Examples include interactive telecourses, teleconferencing and web conferencing, and Internet chats

Distance learning, or distance education, courses are courses in which the instructor and students are geographically separate and interact through the assistance of communication technology

Telecourses offer a logical transition from the traditional, on-campus lecture format to a progressive inclusion of technologies as media for content delivery and interaction. At Laney College. we are employing a progression of technology infusion that allows faculty to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and to assist students develop requisite skills for the 21st century.

Telecourses. An integrated learning system utilizing preproduced video programs, a textbook, and study guide. On-campus meeting provide the platform for interaction.
"Wrapping" video lessons. The instructor develops a 15-30 minute presentation to localize a video lesson. This can be taped and cablecast over PCTV or it can be cablecast live with a synchronous phone or fax question and answer period.
Telecourses with computer support. An additional component is added to the telecourse mode of instruction. Students with personal e-mail accounts are encouraged to utilize a technology activity to communicate with the instructor and with one another, specifically, e-mail and mail-lists. Students without e-mail can become proficient with on-line research by gaining internet access at the local library.
Telecourses enhanced by web-based tutorials. Instructors can establish web pages to supplement video lessons and on-campus meetings.
Add-a- technology. On-line discussion groups, computer-conferencing and audiobridges can be used in appropriate situations.
WWW courses with the video lessons as supplements. This component would ultimately allow us to conveniently meet the educational needs of all distance learners.

All businesses have ratios of expenses to revenue.
They are all determined by each company. There are databases that take this info and publish it as an average of industry, sector, etc.
