Kevin Said:

i need a few good colleges in Ohio for business majors, list any?

We Answered:

go to ohio state. its has one of the best ones in the country. its really competitive though. so you better study hard. you need like a 3.5 to get in and sometimes have to maintain a 3.5+ depending on the major. my friend is in fisher buiness collge now and is in accounting, an he has to maintain a very high gpa just to recieve a job. so you had better get one it.

Need some college choices for my 19yr old daughter - how do we decide what she wants to be when she "grows up"?

We Answered:

Without her being personally motivated the odds are poor of finding the career path she will do well at.

I would almost prefer that she work in the really world to see what she whats to do and if she has what it takes to have a career. I would also consider for her the Military Services, both to get her a rounded experience in the world of business and out of the house. They offer education support, travel and depending on her skill level does not mean she will be sent to a war zone. Support staff all around the world is needed and never needs to carry a gun outside of training camp.

The downside of a temp career in the world near your home is some people will never break the cycle of boring safe work and go back to school, for a lot of reasons.

How many people get into the Ohio University College of Business?

We Answered:

The average GMAT score is only about 500. It isn't a ranked MBA program. The average undergraduate GPA is only a little above 3.0.

It isn't hard to get into.

Ideas for small business in college town?

We Answered:

The answer is to THINK. Think about what college kids need. (a) food (b) school supplies (c) clothing (d) place to relax/blow off steam (e) place to clean their clothing (f) help with their homework, etc. You can think of many others. Perhaps take a trip to another college town and see what businesses are operating there in walking distance of the school. It also matters a lot how large the school is. There needs to be enough kids to make a business successful if you're catering to them and not the general population. Think about consignment stores, dollar stores, convenience stores, laundromats, copy-centers, computer services and accessories, used music stores, and of course, cheap FOOD services.

Would a business economics degree from Xavier University (Ohio) be reputable nationally?

We Answered:

The very first thing one needs to know about the school is whether or not it's accredited by an agency approved by the US Department of Education (USDE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)...

...and it is... by these guys:

North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA-HLC)
Sylvia Manning, Executive Director
30 North LaSalle, Suite 2400
Chicago, IL 60602-2504
Phone: 800-621-7440 or 312-263-0456
Fax: 312-263-7462
Email: [email protected]

...which is one of the US's six big "regional" accreditors.

So far, so good. What THAT means is that, at bare minimum, the school meets "regional" accreditation standards... so it is both credible and of good quality; and its coursework and credits will be generally transferrable to most other colleges/universities.

So, that satisfies the MINIMUM quality requirement part of deciding if the schools is, to use your phrase, "reputable nationally."

But accreditation only speaks to MINIMUM quality standards. Harvard and Yale are also "regionally" accredited, exactly like Xavier is. But I don't think many people would equate Xavier with Harvard or Yale. That would be a MAXIMUM quality assessment...

...which is pretty much what you're looking for, here.

And the assessment that I give it, and my answers to your additional questions are, that Xavier is small but quite good. True, it's not terribly well-known, but it's a VERY respectable school, with fine programs. Its reputability isn't even in question; and the BBA you'd get there would be on par with one from any very good business school.

However, as I think, from your words, you already realize, it'll be the MBA that will be your ticket to whatever hoity-toity New York hobnobbing to which you apparently believe you're entitled.

And, yes, a BBA from Xavier will get you into most any ABA-accredited law school in the country as long as your grades at Xavier are STELLAR; and as long as you kick the LSAT's butt. Fail to do BOTH of those things, and even a BBA from Harvard won't get you into law school.

You're worrying too much... apparently concerned that you're being relegated to a second class school just because that's where the scholarship thing happened to work out.

Well, knock it off! Go, happily, and worry-free to Xavier on that wonderful gift of a scholarship, and stop second-guessing it.

Oy. There are people who would almost literally KILL to be in your shoes. Try a little humility. It will make you a better lawyer, businessman... and man.

Hope that helps. Good luck to you, in life. It's looking like it's starting out well already. Keep up the good work.

What college major combines business and technology?

We Answered:

My sister did her degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She currently uses her degree to manage both IT and Business Unit direct reports. Her understanding of the Oracle DB (she's a certified super-user)and actual business operations (finance, marketing, strategy, etc.) allows her to manage global reporting for various business units at a leading california software company. She is about 26 and makes 80K. Hope this helps...
